Risk of DVT and PE following the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid 19 vaccine
Following the media publications concerning the risks of DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) and PE (Pulmonary Embolism) following the AZ COVID-19 vaccination, we have received the following from the Senior Pharmaceutical Adviser for the South East London Clinical Commissioning Group:
- Reports of blood clots received so far are not greater than the number that would have occurred naturally in the vaccinated population.
- So far across the EU and UK, there have been 15 events of DVT and 22 events of pulmonary embolism reported among those given the vaccine, based on the number of cases the Company has received as of 8 March. This is much lower than would be expected to occur naturally in a general population of this size and is similar across other licensed COVID-19 vaccines.
We have a permanent site in the West Wickham area offering COVID-19 vaccinations for our patients.
Each of the vaccination sites across the borough of Bromley are run by Primary Care Networks (PCNs) that see GP practices working together in geographic areas to offer vaccinations from central sites. Most PCNs in our local area, including ours, are working with the Bromley GP Alliance to roll out the vaccination programme.
